On Sunday, I saw that one could register for next year (2011) for $20. I couldn't do it at the time, but the nice people behind the counter gave a best guess that that price would still be available thru August. Is that true, and how can I do that now?

Hey Cheeser, Stan and I will be updating the site for 2011 pre-regs in the coming months. You'll see an announcement when it comes online (I'll also probably post about it on the Spokantina boards Sticking out tongue)

When are you guys finally going to sell single day passes for those poor folk who can't afford the 3 day pass? Plus some people work on Saturdays too and can't make it all three days. I know a lot of people that would be willing to go not if they can only attend one day.

As I understand it, the City of Spokane charges a rather large tax on daily rates for events, which means that daily passes are not a viable option for us. But I'm not the most knowledgeable person on this subject, perhaps one of the business department can shed some light.

Who cares about the tax per single day admission. Wouldn't boosting your attendance out weigh something petty like taxes?

I'm not exactly sure (personally), but I know we've (the Business Department) researched pretty heavily. We consider all these things, in the end, we need to make sure we can have a Convention for the next year. If it becomes a viable option in the future, then we'll absolutely do it.

Thanks Michelle and John, I will keep an eye out. John, you're my inside guy.

Hey spocant, watch for lower early reg prices like I will. Besides, I'm sure there are a ton of people already asking them about this, and I'm sure that they do the best they can to make sure a con exists, and that it doesn't suck, which, it in fact, ROCKS!

Every year we re-examine the idea of a day-rate. I am not an expert on business and tax but here is my understanding. Somehow we get around paying a tax to the city by selling memberships. We are a non-profit and therefore we don't pay federal tax, but if we sell passes to the con based on a 1 or 2 day entry, then we start paying taxes on ALL the con entries because then it is admission to an event and not a membership to an organization. By the best estimate, we would have to double our attendance to break-even from where we are now. Again, we are in a position where we pay NO TAXES. We need money left over to donate books and to reserve space and bring in our guests. The risk of changing our income structure on the gamble of doubling in size is too great. Keep in mind, we do market research. We don't make our business decisions on hopefulness. That is a fast route to bankruptcy....

Here is the other side...in 2011 we announced we are going to the Fairgrounds. Note, they are NOT in the city limits of Spokane, but they are in the city of Spokane Valley. It is possible there is a different tax structure, or we might be able to obtain special consideration from the city of the Valley. Who knows? Rest assured, we are very aware of this topic and we will look into it! We want to be able to have a day rate, but not at the expense of bankrupting SpoCon. I'm sure you understand...

For those of you interested in pre-registration it is now officially in order. Just follow the link and you'll be all set to get the best rate possible.

That is, the best rate possible without volunteering. If you're interested in volunteering, shoot us an email and we'll get you the details. Dave Morris is in charge of that department this year. Our volunteers are getting in at a reduced membership rate and we're putting together a nice swag bag for everyone who helps out.

As for day rates , I'm afraid we won't be able to do them this year. We spent a great deal of time discussing the pros and cons and ultimately decided against them.

With our new facilities and a great staff working hard to bring you the best SpoCon yet, we're confident that there's more than enough to keep everyone busy for more than just a day.

Thanks Guys ...

Now remember we also offer Group Rates! If your club, group, or organization wants to attend SpoCon as a entity, let us know.

Group rate will be cheaper than the door rate and might make it less expensive if you have to work on that Saturday.

About day rates: as of today you have 261 days to save up the $30 needed for the weekend rate. That equals $0.114 per day so if you drop a dime and two pennies in a jar every day starting tomorrow you will have more than enough to cover the cost of admission if you buy a ticket at the door.

Also as someone who volunteered this year it was a lot of work but it was also great fun. Besides next year no humping gaming tables up 4 flights of stairs.

Day passes sound great but they come with some baggage that we can't deal with or afford this year. If you would purchase a pre-reg package either at this years con or alot earlier in the year you could get your whole weekend for what you would be paying for a day pass.... and you would have it for the whole con weekend.
