Thoughts on food and parking
Hi All,
A few thoughts...
Historically, many, Cons have had a food social. This was frequently called the banquet. Probably a non starter for space reasons at SpoCon. As an alternative, the ConCom might want to ask if the hotel would like to host something like a Baron of Beef (look miss Shirl, *real* beef) or whatever sandwich event. Conceptually similar to David's two years ago. Maybe in the Salon Foyer? Should be on the hotel's nickel rather than the Con's.
While parking doesn't matter to me as I take the bus, $16 per days is likely to sticker shock folks from out of town. Even with "in and out" privileges (where are Alex and his Droogs when you need them?). Parking is a *lot* cheaper, I think, at the Arena. An easy walk through the park. The ConCom might want to investigate. Oh, I've been told that the meters don't cost anything on Sundays. Also been told that they do cost between 8AM and 7PM on other days. I've seen the meter enforcers (you know, those folks that wanted to be dog catchers but couldn't cut the mustard. Doh, did I say that?) in action. They are ruthless.
Have a great day!

Hi Jack,
Regarding parking, you are right that there are a lot of cheaper options around the area. I think the $16/day rate will appeal to SpoCon members who will be staying at the hotel and want a secure place to keep their car overnight. Arena parking would be great, but I don't know if overnight parking is allowed. As the con grows closer, we'll investigate all the various parking options in more detail.
Food is always tricky, I'll leave that to someone more knowledgeable than me. One nice thing about the new location is the number of restaurants that are in walking distance (not counting the in hotel restaurant)! Off the top of my head:

Hi Sean,
I agree about the parking situation for the most part. Not so sure I agree about the 'secure' part. A few years ago there where a rash of smash and grab style thefts involving cars parked at the lot across the street from the hotel. Fortunately, some patrons at the rib place (no longer there) noticed the issue and grabbed the guy doing it.
Wanted to get something on the forums in case anybody was interested in parking options.
Look forward to hearing about the food...
