Hey

I would like someone to write up a paragraph or two about our charity to put into the Programming book. Something cool to let people know what we do this for and have done so far.

Here is a write up for you (with help from my Cheryl):

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SpoCon is more than just a Convention celebrating Fans and everything Fans love.

We server a higher purpose.

No, that higher purpose is not world domination as prophesied by Illimunati-Rob. Our purpose, or mission if you will, is to promote literacy in eduction. Quite simply, we put great books by great writers into the hands of students to get them to think, question, and become better citizens. Citizens that live creative lives full of passion in everything that they do. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible and to buy books for school libraries.

How we do this:
1 - We set aside 50% of residual funds after expenses solely for the purpose of purchasing books for schools and their libraries.
2 - We get wish lists of books provided by our area schools.
3 - We work in co-operation with publishing companies and booksellers for the best possible prices on books selected from these lists.

After our first amazing year, we were blessed to have nearly $5,000.00 in designated funds towards the acquisition of great literature. The benefit was enjoyed by young students in the Spokane and Deep Park School Districts. Since retail prices vary, it is estimated that SpoCon contributed between $7,500.00 and $10,000.00 worth of Science-Fiction and Fantasy printed materials to local schools in the 2008 / 2009 school year.

Sadly, the reality is that budget cuts are hitting harder and harder in ALL areas of education. With your continued support, we will do our part to augment the catalog of stimulating literature in area schools. By fulfilling our mission of promoting literacy in education, we are young minds reach their full potential, and perhaps exceed in areas we can only dream of.

Without you, the Fans, this would not be possible.

Thank you.

Let me know if this is the sort of thing you are looking for.

Nice write up Tim and Cheryl!
I hate to nit-pick, but of course at this stage it is necessary. I noticed two typos. It says "eduction" instead of "education" in the first paragraph. Further down it says "Deep Park School District", which should be "Deer Park School District." Finally the last sentence of the last paragraph says "By fulfilling our mission of promoting literacy in education, we are young minds reach their full potential, and perhaps exceed in areas we can only dream of." We should not end the sentence with a preposition. Also you will notice there is a word missing where it says "we are young minds reach their full potential." I suggest the following change.
"By fulfilling our mission of promoting literacy in education, we are helping young minds reach their full potential, and perhaps exceed in areas of which we can only dream."

Actually, this is Edgar,
Numbers are off, less than $4000 donated, hard to say $7 to $10K in retail.

I agree with Edgar's statement. Let's say "approximately $4,000." Quite a sum...!

Edits made as per suggestions... Thank you!!!
I used "nearly" $4K, and then approximately $6K for retail for not too clear but good numbers. For some reason, my spell checker thinks eduction is okay. Totally missed the "Deep". I wanted to put this up as a starting point and have it gone over by others. I think the tweaks have made better Smiling Thank you again.
