In Memory of Darrell K. Sweet

It was with heavy heart we received news of Darrell K. Sweet passing on December 5, 2011. Since the mid 1970s, Darrell’s illustrations defined many of our most beloved series—including Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time. He was also the illustrator for the well-known Xanth series by Piers Anthony, the Saga of Recluce series by L. E. Modesitt, Jr. and the Runelords series by David Farland as well as the original cover artist for Stephen R. Donaldson's series The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. An avid history buff, Darrell also spent much of his time painting frontiersmen and the American West. His paintings evoked the classic storytelling narration of the Golden Age illustrators. A Sweet cover promised an adventure to be had.

Darrell was nominated for Hugo award in 1983.

Born in Highland Park, New Jersey on August 15, 1934, he graduated from Syracuse University in 1956 with a degree in fine arts. He produced art for trading cards and calendars, and of course book covers. From 1975 to 2005 he produced more than 3,000 images.
