CONDuit just sent out their list of panel ideas for next year. I thought I'd cross-post them here, in case they spark any ideas for our programming. Besides, its always a good idea to gather as many ideas as possible for the programming 'bag-o-tricks', to keep the pump primed for future years.

[I've edited out some of the person-specific panels (local Salt Lake fans)]

If Felicia Day comes, perhaps we can do a Felicia Day Film Festival... We can show all available episodes of The Guild (her own web show), and see if we can get permission from Joss Whedon (with Felicia's help) to show all of her Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes, and Dr. Horrible....

That is a great idea! I've only just seen Dr. Horrible last weekend but now I am going to go search for The Guild. Felicia would be a huge draw for us. =)

WOW That is a LOOONG list of ideas! Lets keep this ball rolling! Anymore ideas?

Personally I would love an interactive panel, I really liked the 'Natural Dyes" panel last year, but I wish that there was demonstration or some such thing.

I think we need to add "Does Science Fiction influence Science" and have our GoH and Science Guest and pros on the panel Smiling

I also have a possible workshop in progress that may draw part of a large international online community. More on that later. Will likely need some space to pull it off. Would be awesome to have the founder of the community here.. perhaps in 2010 Smiling

Would there be any interest in a panel on modeling ( as in building them, not parading around in lace scanties)? I've go 50 years experience, both amateur and pro, real and speculative. (In building, not parading!)

I do know that you guys like your thing and everything, but I do know for a fact that SpoCon would get a lot of revenue if you guys included some anime type deals to the con. AMV contest perhaps, anime show rooms, perhaps some anime panels?

I went to the anime show room last year and wasn't very impressed at all.

I'd be willing to supply or even run an anime show room. That doesn't include all the main stream anime.

I'm sorry I know you guys like your table top games and such but I think that if you add more anime into the programming, you'd get more publicity, popularity and revenue.

I'm an Anime Fan also so I'd love to see more of that, If their is any way I can coordinate with some one to help that happen I would gladly jump on the wagon.
Still I know it takes a lot to organize the Games. Since I'm a die hard Gamer myself, I can't complain about whats been done so far. you guys are just awesome the way you come up with this stuff.

I concur on the Anime ideas! I know quite a few die-hard anime fans and think more could b done.
I also want to see SOMETHING realated to web-comics. I read over 50 daily and was very dissapointed that the one thing I wanted to see wasn't there last year.

I agree, more anime-related programming would be awesome. Our anime chair is Megan Hanson and should be able to be reached at meganh@spocon.org I'm sure she'd be happy to field any questions about the anime lineup for this year. If you have any ideas for anime programming, Nick started a thread about submitting ideas to him here: http://spocon2009.com/node/359

As far as web comics go, I know we've got several people on the convention committee who are die-hard web comic addicts, and we'd love to include some content relating to them. Again, I'm not sure what's lined up for it this year, but hopefully we can work something out. You know the Penny-Arcade guys were originally from Spokane...though they don't seem to look back on it too fondly: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2008/12/17/

I know for 2008, Megan stepped in at the last minute... literally, to take over as Anime chair. Considering the very short time frame she had to work with - weeks instead of months - I think she did a great job. As Stan mentioned, you can contact her and offer suggestions.

We know Anime is a big part of Fandom, and as we like to say -- the more the merrier! We want to keep things as full spectrum as possible, and no, we are not a bunch of table top gamers. I'm a gamer, but never go into most of the table top stuff, it's part of fandom, as well as music, art, books, short stories, costuming, computers, science, dance, movies... shall I go on? Smiling

With continued input from our members -- meaning you -- SpoCon can only grow into an even better event, raising more and more funds for books for kids and supporting literary in education! All the while having a heck of a good time.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming -- they are very much appreciated!

At the very least, someone who could set up an FTP on their computer, and probably a good place to show it. If someone wants to help me get it set up, we can certainly have one. Screening would also be another point of thought.

Klingon panel, FTW!

And no, I don't know Klingon...but I do have the Klingon dictionary book...though it doesn't have as much Klingon as you can find online, which, I know, is often a sketchy resource, but it's fun anyways. Laughing out loud

I think the room where we had the opening ceremony last year will be a perfect place for the AMV contest. If we were to have an AMV contest we need to sort out rules and regulations that the contestant must follow. Here are ideas for different categories for winners according to animemusicvideos.org:

Best Action Video
Best Character Profile
Best Collaborative Project
Best Comedy Video
Best Dance Video
Best Dramatic Video
Best First Video
Best Fun Video
Best Horror Video
Best No-Effects Video
Best Parody Video
Best Romantic Video
Best Sentimental Video
Best Trailer or Commercial
Best Use of Instrumental Music
Best Use of Lip Synch
Best Use of Multiple Anime
Best Use of Special Effects
Most Artistic Video
Most Original Video
Video of the Year
Editor of the Year
Most Helpful Member
Most Improved Editor
Rookie of the Year

So I take it.. that AMV = Anime Music Video?

How about that we expand this? I know several people that put music videos to games, mixups of movies, anime, and so on. Not Fan Films or Machinima which are both separate categories. How about this gets evolved into FMV.. Fan Music Video? Something to think about so the event has a broader scope and can involve MORE people.

Oh, and for getting the vids... you will need to specify the following:

Format: .wmv, .avi, .mpg would be reccomended
Length: 3:30 Max (or you will lose your audience)
They can be submitted on disc, usb drive, email, etc by a certain time.

Then they can be assembled, categorized and then set up to be played. This would involve some sort of screening or pre-judging so that we can keep the presentation to an hour to hour and a half including voting.

Most of those categories are awards, and a voting form that long would prolly end up more cumbersome. But agreed, we'd find some of those categories to vote on, as well as them having been split into their respective genres.

Some AMV contests also have OVA contests attached (Original Video Animation). FMV contest could be an interesting branching of it.

And I think 3:30 is a little short for a time limit. I was thinking more like 4:30-5:00 since the videos will be pre-screened (this is where a screeners panel comes in) and those that would lose an audience by the end can be voted out. Remember, there's no telling how many (or few) entries we'd get.

The contest would probably do better separate from Opening Ceremonies, just because it is such a long event, one which would be a little too restricted by an hours time limit. Two hours is what I've seen.

There are events scheduled in the Wolfe auditorium, but not so many that we can't do this. I think a "Fan Video" competition would be a great addition to SpoCon. I agree with Eelie -- 5 minutes max is more realistic.

For 2009, Entries need to be delivered by when? some time saturday morning? Then do an evening showing after the judging panel has had time to review and allow more time for the presentation.

I believe opening / closing ceremonies will be in the theater in College hall / admin building which frees up the Wolfe for more things like this.

FMV will be pretty cool! To get us in the spirit, EXAMPLES OF FMV'S)

I know that AnimeMusicVideo's list of categories is quite extensive. We can create our own things. Scifi FMV of the Year, Fantasy FMV of the Year, so on and so forth. I can think of categories more suited for Spocon and hopefully have a list posted by tonight.

This may be a duplicate message, I tried to send you a PM earlier today, but my ISP has been up and down like a Yo-Yo so I couldn't tell if the PM made it.

Scale modeling of all sorts. Techniques cross over from genre to genre, so a basic panel/forum will be applicable to everything from figure and miniature gaming to scratchbuilding movie props.

Start with basics, Safety foremost, then an overview of tools, materials, accessories and so forth. Shift to specifics I.E. Painting, airbrushing, photo etch work, resin casting and wrap up with researching sources.

I've started butting together a list of resources available on the internet that run from modeling groups through suppliers.

If you like, I could contact the Spokane Chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society (IPMS) and see if a couple of their members would like to sit in on the panel.

What about getting the "Dead Gentlemen" a semi-famous group of fantasy fan-film makers (The Gamers) based in our VERY OWN Washington State, to come and show their movies, run panels, pose for pics, sign autographs ....or whatever they usually do. I met them at Radcon and they are a nice bunch.

Or perhaps getting "Barats & Beretta" to come perform or showcase their collection of viral video shorts? They were even grads of Gonzaga! While their subjects are not always geek-related, what they do applies to fan film makers and perhaps a panel by them would be of benefit to Spocon attendees.

Also, Is anyone interested in having another "Geek Trivia Contest"? Last year went pretty well and local businesses put up some swell prize support.

Jus' sayin'

"Do not search for us, we will find you. Do not wait for us, we are here ... all ready. Do not whisper your name, we know it well.
